Thanks to everyone who entered the September competition. Iy took us a while to judge this one as we had so many high quality entries.
Three winners have been chosen from the Highly Commended set which you can find here.
WINNER – Stephen Todd
This is a great example of simple, direct portraiture that tells you something about the subject without props, colour or clothing. Firstly, it is beautifully taken, with a well-chosen background but the real beauty of the portrait is in the expression. The subject speaks directly to the viewer and is mesmerising in a way. The expression asks you something of yourself as you view it. It’s exceptionally difficult to achieve this effect, so well done Stephen on a really great shot.
SECOND PLACE – Richard Hunt-Smith
This shot took second place because it has such a depth of tonal range as well as capturing a beautiful composition in action. Look at the placement of their arms which gives this photo an elegance to the eye. It also fulfils an important element of street photography as it has captured a moment in time. The background has been used cleverly to frame the couple deepening and strengthening the composition. Well done Richard!
THIRD PLACE – Viktoria Szalai
This image simply has a beautiful quality. When you take a portrait, think about what you want to convey in your image and from your subject and then shoot appropriately. Viktoria has done this. The subject is clearly deep in thought and the photo has a dream-like quality. They complement each other and that’s why it works. When you see a photo that moves you, try to think why that is. Usually, it’s because there is a complement between the subject and the scene and this is perfectly illustrated here. Well done Viktoria.
