Street Photography Course 7th May London

Thanks to everyone who attended a very successful street photography workshop in London on the 7th May.

Street photography is always a challenge in that it is important to recognise the difference between straight portraiture and a street shot which captures a moment in time.

This group supplied some superb portraiture which we very much enjoyed looking at however we have not chosen those shots as winners.

We are looking for that special capture which creates a narrative within the frame and adds a story to the subject.

With that in mind, here are the winners and commendable mentions:

Winner: Nikki Yun

This is a good example of colour in composition. The eye is drawn through the frame as there are three women wearing vibrant clothing. The fact that the main subject has a selfie stick yet we cannot see their face is an interesting concept. This is a well-observed street shot and a good example of having your eyes open to capture a moment.

Commendable mention: Adrian Rayson

We do love a classic street shot and this almost ticks all the boxes. It has movement, dramatic shadows, context and is well exposed. This could have been a winner if we had the family moving closer to the camera.

Commendable mention: Harvey Wells

There is just something about this shot that we like. It just has a feeling and atmosphere to it that is hard to pinpoint specifically. It is full of squares and this adds an interesting element to the composition. It’s a window into the life of a hardworking bar person in London.

Here is an example of a golden street photography opportunity. Symmetry is an important concept in this genre and if you see a group of men, all wearing the same outfits, hang around for the perfect composition. Although the composition gives you a feeling of exclusion, so it works, we would have loved to have seen some other shots from a different angle here.

Again, well done to all participants and see you on the next workshop de-brief!
