Congratulations to Gail Portlock as she has been awarded the first prize in our IOP Mono Competition. The eyes really do have it in this stunning portrait of a young girl. This photo evokes a reaction in the viewer and you feel a real connection with the subject, which is what portraiture is all about.

“This photo was taken in my log cabin that I use as a studio. I used a 350 watt flash placed to the left and natural lighting to the right. The camera I use is the Canon 5d Mk3. My settings were :- speed 1/ 200 , F/7.1 ISO 100.
I use the 200 speed for any slight movement that might happen. The lighting is perfect with natural and flash together. I then brushed it up in Lightroom with a little clarity and sharpness mainly the eyes. Took down the vibrance and saturation for the black and white effect.”
