Congratulations to Richard Winston, the runner-up in our Autumn mono competition. We were delighted with this detailed macro shot and the use of mono really brings out the detail and textures.

“My main interest is in photographing birds and other wildlife, usually in various countries around the world. This time however I spotted a dragonfly loitering in our garden at home and spent about 20 minutes taking various shots of it as it regularly landed on a curved metal pole that we hang bird seed from. The dragonfly was very obliging and allowed me get pretty close, although my long lens meant I could do so without disturbing it. The photo was shot in colour but I liked the focus on shapes and texture that converting to black and white gave it. I also liked the way the light threw the dark shadow on the left and picked out the threads of spider web around the pole. This seemed to give it a little more atmosphere.” Richard Winston, 3 Dec 2014
