Weather photography

Thanks again for submitting to July’s ‘Weather Photography’ assignment. Not an easy subject this month but I’m so glad you gave it your best shot, and as a result, I’ve had some fantastic submissions!

Winner: Catherine Pickard

I like this image by Cat. It transcends a few different processes that it just so happens we have looked at over the last couple of months!

We have some great reflection for a start and a wonderful range of tones, which lends itself well to B&W. As a result, we have what would be classed as an ingenious and attractive Street Photography image also!

I think it’s a lovely comment on weather; our photographer perhaps shelters from the rain and ironically captures this scene while doing so? Usually, I would go on about that shutter being far too slow, but somehow you have captures the surroundings in pin sharp and have the figure out of focus, which I think works for the shot itself.

We throw our attention to this great context with a beautiful range of tones and have this solitary figure sat just to the right (compositionally perfect). Funnily enough, it’s the character that lets us know it’s raining outside of this sheltered area. I think without that umbrella we wouldn’t know any different, though that wonderful texture on the surface of the floor hints at it as we go from the matte of the brick to that wet, reflective sheen.

Commendable entry: Richard Findlay

This is a lovely calming image by Richard. I like the way he has shot into that sunset and exposed the shot so that his immediate foreground is in silhouette.

This can sometimes be a bit distracting but in this instance, it provides us with a very pleasant framing around the edge of the shot. As we look a little more, we discover that only the sky and water are exposed in the entire shot, which again I feel adds to that calmness. The addition of the fishermen disturbing the water slightly is great – I can almost hear the water lapping gently at the banks.
A lovely symmetry to this shot. Nice and sharp and with beautiful colours!
