The wonders of winter photography

The wonders of winter photography tutorial | IntroductionTain shore - winter photography

Dark evenings, foul weather, gloomy light, frost and fog – perfect conditions for photography, we say. Never mind the sunny days of summer, it’s winter that offers real photographic potential, so get your camera out of hibernation and start shooting.

Subjects are everywhere. The weather itself makes for great photos whether you’re shooting rain-lashed seascapes, stark and stormy landscapes or mist-shrouded early mornings.

You get the sun in winter too of course, but the light is lower and more sharply angled than in summer, offering interesting textured effects.

Your photography needn’t stop when the sun goes down, either. Armed with a tripod and a little patience, anyone can try their hand at night shooting. Most digital cameras handle low-light pictures well and many simple snapshot cameras come with a night scene shooting mode featuring longer shutter speeds to cope with reduced light levels.
Also, winter is a time for celebration, notably Christmas and then New Year. We all take lots of standard, flash-lit party shots but the quality isn’t all it might be.
However, a little know-how makes it possible to produce professional looking Christmas portraits, candid shots and family photos that you’ll want to treasure year after year.
