March Photography Project

The IOP® March monthly photography project is focusing on street photography.

This month, to welcome in the start of Spring, some (hopefully) warmer weather and my participation in the new Manchester photography workshops next month, I want us to take a look at Street Photography.

Though street photography is as broad as it is long, there are certain specifics and themes that are regularly adhered to by any street shooter.

What I’d like to do for this project is strip Street Photography of it’s specifics and give you all the chance to simply get outside and shoot!

It may be architecture that interests you, people in particular environments or even weather and light.

In the months to come I will be running workshops on the streets of Manchester and really getting to grips with what Street Photography IS and how it’s portrayed. So before any of that, I’d love to have you all show me your own interpretations of street shots.

Just a few do’s and don’ts before we get started:

Do think about your editing and what is required.

Don’t over edit or edit for no reason. Some of the greatest street photographers never touched a shot after it left the film roll.

Do have fun with it! Explore composition, angles, light, people and environment. Rules can be broken.

Don’t provide any information with your shot. A brief sentence at the most will suffice. Whether you’re happy with the shot or not, it’s important your audience makes up it’s own mind.

Don’t confuse Street with Landscape. I’m not looking for all encompassing shots or ‘scapes’. Street is about getting right into the environment.

Do make sure your photo has EXIF data visible

If you have any questions or want to run things by me, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line in the General Comments and Critiques forum.
